Sirsi Marikamba Temple is a renowned Hindu temple situated in Sirsi, Karnataka, India. It is a shrine to Marikamba Devi, or Durga Devi. It was constructed in 1688 and is famous for its stunning architecture and elaborate carvings. The temple’s principal deity, Marikamba Devi, is carved in a terrible form, riding a tiger and killing a demon. The temple is visited by thousands of followers each year, particularly in the bi-annual Sirsi Jathre fair, one of Karnataka’s largest fairs. The fair hosts a turnout of more than 25 lakh (2.5 million) attendees.
The blue-painted, 19th-century-added facade of the temple is bounded by cloisters which are laden with portraits of deities found in Hindu epics, in addition to housing a courtyard. The sanctum sanctorum contains a 7-foot (2.1 meters) tall idol of Marikamba Devi, which was brought from a pond along the road to Hangal. The temple also contains unique murals in the Kaavi art style, which was prevalent in the coastal Konkan region of Karnataka. These murals are done by stripping off the top plastered layer colored with a red pigment to expose a lower white layer of plaster. The temple is an important cultural and religious monument in Karnataka.
