History of Kurmanathaswamy Temple
Legend has it that King Swetha Chakravarthi, a devoted devotee, was blessed by Lord Vishnu when he manifested here in Kurma form. The temple’s spiritual significance is confirmed by its mention in several Puranas, including the Kurma Purana. Although the temple was built in the second century AD, the Eastern Ganga dynasty made significant renovations to it in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. With elaborate stone carvings and inscriptions in Telugu and Sanskrit, the architecture combines Dravidian and Kalinga architectural elements.
Under the support of the Gajapati kings of Odisha and the Eastern Ganga kings, the temple flourished. Royal donations, land grants, and festivals arranged by these dynasties are mentioned in a number of copper plate inscriptions.
